Do It Yourself Closet Organization

A well-organized closet can save time when dressing in a hurry. Knowing exactly where a business pants suit and matching blouse hangs in the closet allows a person to grab the items without digging through a mess of garments. Organize your closet to achieve this. Closet organization requires a person to sort through belongings and come up with a system for them. For example, if you attend parties frequently, keep dresses, wraps and covers near each other. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove everything from the closet. Place anything that no longer fits or you haven't worn in a year in a pile, according to "My Home Ideas." Trash the items, give them away or sell them. Split the items you keep into piles that reflect the type of storage needed (folded or hanging, for example).

2. Arrange items that go into containers in piles of similarity. For example, put all dress shoes in one pile and undergarments in another. Place the items in containers and then place the containers into the closet where you can get to them easily. For example, place a box of sweaters on a shelf in the middle during the winter so you can grab one from the box without digging through other boxes.

3. Slip the over-the-door hanging rack onto the top of the closet door so the hooks point inside the closet. Hang items like purses, robes and jackets on the hooks. The hooks hold grab-and-go items well.

4. Put all the hanging items on hangers. Place the hangers in the closet. Arrange the clothing in a way that works efficiently for you. For example, if you wear certain clothes for work, hang all of those items near each other. This helps you find what you are looking for faster. Don't hang too many items in the closet. If you cannot remove a hanger without any effort, there are too many clothes.

5. Place another hanging bar underneath the clothes on the first one if you need more room to hang items. Hang shorter items, like pants folded over, on the lower bar. Some hanging bars just slip in between the walls, dismissing the need to drill holes in the wall. These types of bars adjust up and down easily since they aren't mounted to the wall.
