Designing a kitchen can be a daunting task when building or remolding a home.
Whether you are building a new home or you simply want to remodel your current house, designing a kitchen can be one of the most important tasks you undertake. The kitchen, one of the most used rooms in a house, is highly impacted by the layout and spacing of the cabinetry inside. When planning your kitchen layout, remember to provide plenty of storage space for pots and pans, and give yourself enough workspace. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Think about the look you want for the kitchen. Planning and designing the kitchen cabinet area will be significantly easier if you can identify what type of room you would like, such as a kitchen with a lot of space by the stove, or a large central island where friends and family can gather while you're preparing meals. Decide what style you prefer: traditional, modern or eclectic. A traditional kitchen might feature oak cabinetry, whereas a modern kitchen might feature stainless steel; eclectic kitchens offer a bit of both styles. You can check out plenty of styles online or at your local home improvement store.
2. Examine your current kitchen and identify any problems you have with it. Do you have enough room? Does it have too much storage?
3. Measure out your walls, doors, windows and any other obstructions if you are remodeling your kitchen. It will be important to consider these factors when designing the kitchen.
4. Draw out, to scale, the kitchen you intend to build. This should help put the kitchen's size and workspace in perspective. Include the dimensions of all walls, doors and windows that will be in the kitchen.
5. Test the work triangle of the kitchen. Measure the distance, in feet, between the sink, refrigerator and stove. According to Distinctions Cabinetry, if the sum of the 3 measurements is less than 12 feet, you don't have enough room. If you have more than 26 feet, then you're wasting space.
6. Compare your ideal kitchen to that of a friend's kitchen who has something similar. Prepare a dish at their house and see just how ergonomic and storage-friendly the kitchen really is.
