Mount Shelving

Increase storage space in a closet or laundry room with shelving.

Shelving creates a more organized space and improves the functionality of a room. It can be mounted anywhere you want it, such as in a laundry room, garage or closet. Mounting shelving is not too difficult, as long as you have the right tools. Shelving systems usually include ready-made shelves, which are attached to metal standards and brackets. Shelving units are highly customizable. You choose the color and size of shelves and the brackets can be slid anywhere into the standards, allowing for as many or few shelves as you need. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Mount Shelving

1. Determine where you want to mount the shelving on the wall.

2. Slide a stud finder along the wall to locate the studs. Mark the first stud and its width with a pencil. Move over 32 inches to find a second stud. Mark the stud and its width with the pencil.

3. Hold one of the standards on the wall even with one of the studs, putting it between the width marks. Use a pencil to mark where the top screw hole falls on the stud. Drill a one-eighth-inch pilot hole through the pencil mark.

4. Hold the standard in place. Drill a 2 1/2-inch flathead wood screw through the pilot hole.

5. Place a 4-foot level against the edge of the standard. Adjust the standard until it is vertically level.

6. Drill a one-eighth-inch pilot hole through the bottom screw hole in the standard. Drill a 2 1/2-inch flathead wood screw through the pilot hole.

7. Hook a shelf bracket at the same level into each standard. Hold the second standard up to the other stud 32 inches away, placing it between the width marks. Lay a 4-foot level across the two shelf brackets. Adjust the unsecured standard until it's level with the first and mark the top screw hole location with a pencil.

8. Drill a one-eighth-inch pilot hole through the pencil mark. Hold the standard in place and drill a 2 1/2-inch flathead wood screw through the pilot hole. Hold the level up to the edge of the standard and adjust it until it is level.

9. Drill a one-eighth-inch pilot hole through the bottom screw hole in the standard. Drill a 2 1/2-inch flathead wood screw through the pilot hole.

10. Slide a shelf onto the installed brackets. Drill a one-eighth-inch hole through the front of the bracket at the small mounting hole. Drill about half-way through. Hold down the shelf and drill a 1 1/4-inch flathead wood screw up through the bracket and into the shelf.

11. Install the rest of the shelving brackets and shelves according to your personal preference in spacing.
