Fix Holes In A Wooden Closet Door

Fix holes in wooden doors easily to make them look like new.

Closet doors are where most people put hooks for robes and jackets, or install shoe racks and mirrors. Unfortunately, this sometimes leaves holes in the door when you take them down. And in the case of hollow doors, the weight of what you hang up can tear even bigger holes. Fixing these holes is not difficult and only requires a little bit of time and some basic supplies. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Fill the hole in the door with wood putty. Use a putty knife to smooth it over slightly out from the surface of the door. The putty will shrink as it dries so you need to apply more to allow for it. Let it dry for a few hours.

2. Insert a plug of some type such as balled-up paper, foam insulation or a wood dowel into the hole if the door is hollow. Afterward, spread wood putty over the plug. Let it dry. If using a dowel, glue it in place with epoxy and let it stick out from the door 1/16 of an inch. Do not cover the dowel with putty.

3. Sand down the putty or dowel flush with the door.

4. Touch up the spot where the hole was with matching paint using a paintbrush.
