Change A Room Into A Walkin Closet

There are a few constants in life. One is that there is never enough closet space. Turning an extra bedroom into a walk-in closet is a great way to maximize unused space as well as clear the clutter. You could hire an expensive closet designer, but with a little research and elbow grease, the closet of your dreams can be a do-it-yourself project. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Turning the Extra Room into Extra Storage Space

1. Remove the clutter. Before you begin drafting closet designs or purchasing closet organizers to help transform your dead, unused space into the closet of your dreams, clear out the old room completely. Many spare rooms turn into a junk room and simply store stuff that you're not quite sure if you should keep or not. Determine what goes and what stays. Once that task is completed, set the 'keeps' aside so you have a clean slate to work with.

2. Determine your storage needs. Are you storing clothes, shoes, boxes, paperwork or jewelry? What you need to store will greatly affect the design of your closet. Take an inventory of what will be going into the new walk in closet before you design it. Once you have that foundation, you can create the closet of your dreams with a little imagination.

3. Create a budget. Changing that small, extra room into a walk-in closet can get pricey. It's possible to turn a spare room into a custom closet with some work. Add maple wood shelving with a mahogany finish for a polished look. If you're on a thrifty budget, this doesn't mean you cannot get a functional walk-in. Do your research and look for sales. You might have to sacrifice custom lighting or an expensive closet designer, but it doesn't mean that you can't turn wasted space into extra space by doing it yourself.

4. Purchase proper storage containers. Different closet organizing products suit different needs. Will you be using the extra closet as a changing room or just for storage? Will you be storing seasonal clothing? Is the closet for clothing or extra general storage? Will you be replacing dressers? Do you need to build wall storage? All of these questions will determine your closet design. For example, if the new closet will be used as clothing closet and a changing room, you will want mirrors, a vanity, shoe racks, jewelry organizers and more to complete the design. If the room is just for storage, then you can get away with shelving, storage boxes and basic closet organizers. From hat racks to sliding storage space, you can have it all.
