Design Ideas For Kids' Bedrooms

Storage shelves are a vital design aspect in any kid's bedroom.

The sky is the limit when it comes to design ideas for kids' bedrooms. From elaborate recreations of fairytale castles to simple nature themes, there are possibilities for any style or budget. The best design ideas for kids' bedrooms include easily accessible storage, craft and play areas, in addition to basic sleep and surface areas. Accessible storage is particularly important if you want your child to clean up her own room. Does this Spark an idea?

Desk-and-Shelf Combo

Combine a desk and shelf design to create a storage and craft area along one bedroom wall. A short cubbyhole shelf provides a crisp look. Adding the desk to the design turns the top of the shelf into a functional work surface. The middle of the unit should have no shelves, leaving an open desk area large enough for two kids to use. Add two white benches to provide seating for the desk area. Books, toys and craft materials can fill the cubbyholes, adding splashes of color to the area.

If you don't have an empty wall, but you do have an empty closet, turn the area into a desk-and-shelf nook. A simple desk and chair tucked into a closet with the doors removed provides a quiet, out-of-the-way craft area. Shelves above and on each side of the desk allow the remaining closet area to be used for anything, from buckets of craft supplies to boxes of clothes.

Nook Storage

One trick to keeping a clutter-free bedroom for kids is to create storage space in every available nook and cranny. Corner nets on each upper wall corner provide an area to display stuffed animals that are no longer played with, but are too sentimental to toss. The triangular nets secure to the corner area a few feet below the ceiling and can hold lightweight items.

Baskets, boxes and plastic containers that slide under a child's bed can hold artwork, clothes, toys, books and just about anything else you need to get out of the way. A window seat that lifts up to reveal a storage bin combines a bench, reading nook and toy box into one compact item.

Reading Nook

Provide a warm and cozy reading nook in your child's bedroom to create a personal quiet area and encourage reading skills. The front of a teepee sticking out from the corner of a room creates a reading/playing nook with a Wild West theme. The leathery fabric front of the teepee can curve out to produce enough seating room inside for at least four kids. Add faux leather and faux fur pillows for soft seating. A small log bookcase with two shelves is also useful for storing books and can fit in with the overall design.

Change up the theme of the nook and hang a white organza and pink ribbon canopy in the corner of the room for a princess motif. Long curtains cascading from the canopy can fall against the wall to create a sense of privacy. Use oversized velvet-textured pillows for soft seating in a royal-themed nook. A small pink shelf with white organza curtains provides a fancy storage area for books.
