Turn A Closet Into A Desk Space

Wall shelving is the key to an effective closet to office conversion.

Space in a home is often limited and creating a quiet place to work is a challenge. The number of people working from home is growing and more people are in need of home offices. Instead of taking over an entire room in your home or apartment, convert a closet into an efficient work space. Essentially, an effective modern office requires few elements. You need a desk space, shelving for books and storage for paperwork. Make a few small changes to an existing closet and completely transformation the space into a tranquil home office. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the contents of the closet, including clothes, storage boxes and any other items that have accumulated.

2. Unscrew the screws from the closet door hinges using a screw gun. Remove the closet bars for hanging clothes using a screw gun.

3. Hold a curtain rod with mounts attached over the outside of the closet door casing. Drive the included screws through the mounts with a screw gun into the door casing. Remove the curtain rod from the mounts and slide a curtain onto the curtain rod. Pivot the rod in place on the mounts.

4. Place a small desk with the back side up against one wall of the closet. Select a wall that allows you to work within the space most efficiently. Position a desk lamp in one corner of the desk's surface. Roll a task chair into the leg space on the desk.

5. Select a wall or walls to install shelving on. Shelving can house all of your books, office supplies and peripheral electronic devices. Slide a stud finder along each selected wall at the height that you would like to install the shelves. Mark the location of each stud across the wall or walls with a pencil.

6. Hold a slotted bar vertically against the wall or walls where you plan to install shelving at two evenly spaced studs along each wall. The bars should be installed at a slightly shorter length than the shelves in your kit. For example, if you have 36-inch long shelves, space the bars 32 inches apart, since studs are located 16 inches on center.

7. Fasten the bars to the wall by driving screws through the mounting holes in the bars into the wall studs with a screw gun.

8. Slide the shelf supports at corresponding heights into the slots in the bars. Pivot a shelf over each pair of supports and lock it in place.

9. Place a rolling file caddy near your desk and hold books in place on your shelving using book ends. Store office supplies and electronics on the shelving.

10. Hold a wall-mounted file sorter on a wall near your desk. Align the mounting holes with the wall studs. Drive the included screws through the mounting holes into the wall studs with a screw gun.
