If you feel comfortable with planning a remodeling project, you can design and complete the project on your own to save a significant amount of money. Consulting with an interior designer or hiring out the finishing work adds to the budget but infuses a professional touch to the project. Assess your own skills and budget when deciding approach the project. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Make a list of aspects that you like and dislike in the master bedroom. Include big things like flooring and furniture and the small things such as accessories. Prioritize the list to determine which areas of the room are most important to address during the remodel, particularly if the budget is limited.

2. Select an overall theme or design style for the master bedroom. Select decorative elements during the remodeling phase that fit that theme. Determine which items are reusable for your new design. Consider adding a coat of paint or stain to existing furniture for an inexpensive makeover.

3. Choose the color scheme for the room. The decorating style often lends itself naturally to certain colors. For example, a relaxing tone is created with soothing colors such as light blue or sea green. An invigorating room is created with bold colors. Select accent to add punches of color throughout the room. Determine how you will integrate these colors through bedding, wall décor and other accents.

4. Paint the walls for a refreshing look and to create the background for the new design. Paint any furniture that is being reused to make it fit in with the new décor.

5. Replace or refinish the flooring as determined in your design plan. If the budget is limited, consider shampooing the carpet or refinishing hardwood floors instead of replacing it. Add accent rugs for color.

6. Install new light fixtures or polish the existing fixtures.

7. Arrange the furniture within the master bedroom. Try different arrangements to determine the ideal location that creates the best flow. Add any storage containers and systems in the room, particularly in the closet.

8. Add the accents on the walls, bedding and other areas of the master bedroom to finish the look.
