Anchor A Gun Safe

Installing a gun safe is more than setting the combination.

You may think that the weight of a gun safe prevents you from having to anchor it, but if you have ever heard of a robber who has tied a tow chain to a safe and then drove away with it, you know the only way to assure that your guns are safe is to anchor the safe to your home or business foundation. Installing the anchors that came with your safe or replacement anchors could mean the difference between your guns being home when you get there and providing a new safe for the criminal. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Anchoring a gun safe in a closet behind the clothes is a good way to hide it.

Chose a location for the gun safe where it will fit and open easily but it is concealed enough to make it less vulnerable to theft. Blocking access to the sides and top of the safe, where the steel structure may be thinner, is also recommended.

2. Measure the demensions of the safe and the location of the pre-set anchor holes.

Obtain the dimensions of the safe in the manufacturer's specifications or by measuring it with a measuring tape. Use a pencil to draw the dimensions of the bottom and back of your safe onto the floor and wall, respectively, using a yard stick as a guide.

3. Locate and measure the location of the pre-set drill holes in the bottom and the back of the safe. Mark their exact position onto the floor and wall with a pencil. Line up the back hole locations with a wall stud.

4. A drill makes the pilot holes a snap.

Drill pilot holes into the wall and floor at the marked hole locations. Use a drill equipped with the proper bit for your anchors and the material that you will be drilling into. If the supplied hardware consists of separate anchors and screws, press the anchor portion of them into the pilot holes at this time.

5. Wheel the safe into position. Use a dolly that is rated to handle a weight greater than your safe's weight, and line up the pre-set drill holes with the pilot holes.

6. Lag bolts are recommended for anchoring a gun safe.

Screw the screws or lag bolts with anchors through the pre-set drill holes into the anchors or wall and floor with a drill equipped with the proper driver.
