Storage Ideas For Varioussized Crutches

Shorten adjustable crutches for easier storage.

If you are reorganizing your closet, finding space for oddly shaped items can present a problem. While you can easily hang shirts, pants and jackets, you'll likely find other items, such as crutches, difficult to fit into the space provided. Fortunately, crutches are relatively flat, meaning you can stick them between and alongside other objects already in your closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Wall Hooks

Hang crutches using wall hooks. Purchase press-on hooks that have an adhesive back, or purchase screw hooks that will screw right into the drywall. Crutches don't weigh much, which eliminates the need to anchor these hangers into wall studs. Select a space either on the side or back wall of the closet to place the hooks. Place two hooks for each crutch. Measure the width of the crutch's top crossbar to avoid placing the hooks too far apart. For example, if the top cross bar measures 7 inches, place hooks at 2 inches and 5 inches. Rest your crutch on the hooks, and repeat to hang the second crutch.

Behind the Shoe Rack

If you have a portable shoe rack, you can slide it out a few inches and store adjustable crutches behind the rack. At the base of each adjustable crutch leg, you can lengthen or shorten the crutch by pressing on a tab and then sliding the leg. Press the tab, and make each adjustable crutch as short as possible. Then simply slide the crutches behind the shoe rack until you have hidden them well.

Top Shelf

If you have smaller crutches with a length in the neighborhood of 36 to 48 inches, store them on the top shelf of your closet. Measure the length of your top shelf. If it exceeds the size of the crutches, simply lay them on that shelf. If you are using wooden crutches, lay them on top of other objects versus the other way around; otherwise, the weight of the other objects on top of the wooden crutches could damage them.

Hangers

The width of a hanger usually exceeds the width of crutches, no matter their size. Find metal hangers (so they are somewhat malleable) and place the top of the hanger through the inside near the top of the crutch (where the arm pad is located.) You'll notice that the crutch is now securely on the hanger. Hang the crutch in the closet as you would any other piece of clothing. Repeat this step with the other crutch.

Loan Closet

If you are not simply storing one pair of crutches but have several pairs to store, contact your community loan closet --- usually run by medical charitable organizations such as the Red Cross. These facilities store crutches and other medical equipment, then loan them to people in their time of need --- a way to give back to the community while at the same time finding a place to store your crutches. Then, if you ever need crutches for yourself, you can contact the loan closet and get a pair for yourself.
