Occasionally it can be necessary to paint linen closet shelves. There are two ways to approach a closet shelf paint job: If the shelves lift out and you can remove them from the closet, this is the best way to approach painting closet shelves. In some cases (particularly in older buildings) the closet shelves may not be removed easily. In this case you'll have to paint them inside the closet.
Instructions
1. Select the paint for the shelves. Prime the shelves first. Obtain matte primer from a local hardware store. Purchase laminate paint in the color you desire from a local hardware store. Laminate paint protects against mold and bacterial growth, so it is ideal for shelving in linen closets.
2. Remove the shelves from the closet if this is possible (if not see step 3). Place them on a flat surface on top of a layer of newspaper so as not to paint anything you don't want to. Using primer, paint one side of the shelves and all of the edges. Let dry, flip the shelves and paint the other side. Repeat these steps with the colored laminate paint. It may take two coats for the color to be solid. Repeat these steps for each shelf. Let the paint dry thoroughly between each step and before you replace the shelves in the closet.
3. For shelves that will not easily come out of the closet use masking tape to cover all the surrounding walls thoroughly. Masking tape will protect the walls from being painted. Using a paint brush, prime the top, bottom and any other sides of the shelves that are visible. Let dry. Paint the shelves with the laminate paint. It may take two coats for the color to be solid. Remove masking tape from the walls once the paint has dried.
