Diy Storage Locker Bench

DIY: Storage Locker Bench

Are you looking for a way to keep your entryway or mudroom clutter under control? Have you become buried under piles of shoes, coats and backpacks? If you're ready to add some control to your entryway area, look no further than some simple storage locker bench solutions that will not only combat the clutter but will provide a welcoming area in which to greet your guests and family. Does this Spark an idea?

Assess the Space and Design

Assess the space in which you will be building the storage locker bench. Account for doorways and doors that open up into the room. Measure the usable area and determine how many lockers you would like and how many you can fit into the space. Account for a 30-inch bench that will sit next to the lockers.

Purchase Unfinished Bookcases

Visit an unfinished furniture store (either locally or online) and purchase as many unfinished bookcases (with adjustable shelves) as you need lockers. An ideal sized bookcase is 15 to 24 inches in width by 72 to 80 inches in height. Prep for painting by filling holes or gaps with wood filler and gently sand the entire bookcase. Apply two coats of either white (use primer first) or black paint.

Use an Unfinished Wood Cube

Purchase a double cubed wooden cubbie measuring 30 inches long. Fill holes and gaps with wood filler, gently sand and paint the same color as the storage lockers. Place the cubbie on its side lengthwise to create a bench. Place baskets in the cubes to hide clutter. Add a couple of decorative pillows to the top of the bench for decorative interest.

Put it All Together

Create the storage lockers by placing the bookcases side by side and attaching them to the wall with screws from the inside. Position the storage bench next to the storage lockers. Put one of the adjustable shelves 12 inches from the bottom of the locker. Use the bottom of the locker for shoes and place a basket on the bottom shelf for keys, sunglasses and cell phones. Hang two or three coat hooks in the locker at a level that allows coats to hang comfortably above the basket. Place a few more of the shelves above the coat racks to keep other clutter neat and orderly.

Consider Laminate

Another option is to purchase laminated ClosetMaid closet organizers and build a similar storage locker bench unit. Assemble the closet organizers per manufacturer's instructions and create a layout similar to the bookcase and cubby configuration.
