Remodel A Closet

Remodeling your closet adds space and organization.

Remodeling your closet means cleaning, organizing, revamping and adding space to it. In most cases, you do not need to hire a professional contractor to complete the renovations. You can update your closet with a little time and hard work. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Grab a notebook and pen and jot down what you want and need in your closet. Do this before you clear your closet to accurately see exactly what will enhance it.

2. Clean out the closet. Make two piles: keep or donate. Rule of thumb: if you haven't worn an outfit, purse or pair of shoes in the past year, donate the item, unless it is for special occasions.

3. Measure the closet's size and determine what items you need to add in the space. Ask yourself these questions: Do you need more shelving or racks? More dressers or a seating area? Consider these things before shopping.

4. Visit a home improvement store with your shopping list. Ask a salesperson to help you locate items to remodel your closet. In addition to shelving, racks and storage, choose a paint color, lighting fixture or flooring. Because the closet usually isn't a visible part of the house, pick whatever color you prefer.

5. Paint the walls, install the flooring (if applicable), additional shelving, racks and lighting. Consider hiring a professional to complete these tasks if you are uncomfortable with completing them on your own. If you choose to hire a professional, contact family and friends for referrals or check websites such as Angie’s list or Service Magic to read reviews from other homeowners about their experiences with contractors in your area.

6. Add d cor to the room to liven it up. If you have enough space, consider adding a chair, pictures or even a full-length mirror.
