Things For A Baby Nursery

Mobiles can soothe and entertain babies.

You'll need many things for a nursery, from wallpaper to mattress protectors. Prioritize the essential items and create a checklist of things to buy. Some items, like a crib and baby monitor, are essential, but others, such as a changing table, can make tasks easier. Most nursery items are available in an array of different colors and patterns, so it's fairly easy to find something that fits your nursery. Does this Spark an idea?

Decor

You will need paint or wallpaper to decorate the nursery. Use wallpaper that has a theme like teddy bears or the alphabet. Enhance the look with paintings and family photos. Curtains or blinds can complement the nursery's design, but they also have an important functional role; you need to have the capability to change the light level in your baby's room to help him sleep and prevent strong sunlight.

Furniture

Arguably one of the most important things in your baby's nursery is the crib, cradle or bassinet. Review the latest safety advice before buying one because this often changes. A glider or rocker will help you feed your new baby and settle him. A nightstand with draws is also useful and can be used to keep feeding equipment inside. A large wardrobe will store all the baby clothes you've bought or have been given. Changing tables or tabletop changers are another piece of furniture that you'll definitely need and that can make changing diapers an easier task.

Bedding

Waterproof mattress pads help keep your baby's crib dry. Keep two of them in the nursery so you always have one at hand when the other is in the wash. You will also need a mattress if one didn't come with your crib, and it has to fit snugly with no large gaps around the edge. You should have at least two sets of sheets, duvet covers, comforters and blankets so you can use one set while the other is in the wash.

Accessories

A nightlight or low wattage lamp allows you to check your baby at night without disturbing her. A bin and diaper disposal are essential for keeping your nursery organized and clean. Other accessories that help you keep organized include storage baskets for things like toys, clothing and blankets and a closet organizer so you can find clothes easily. A clock lets you keep time of feeds, and a CD player can be used to help soothe and settle your baby.

Safety

A smoke and carbon dioxide detector are essential for peace of mind and can potentially save your baby's life. Monitors alert you when your baby wakes or needs attention. A room thermometer helps you check that the room is a comfortable and consistent temperature, and crib bumpers give protection to your baby when he tosses and turns at night.
