Remodel A Hall Closet

Remodel your hall closet to make better use of its space.

If your family's jackets, boots and other outdoor wear are spilling out of your hall closet or if it seems that you just don't have enough space to store everything that needs to fit in the closet, it may be time to remodel. Remodeling a hall closet can be a simple task, depending on how much you want to change. In addition to improving the storage space in the closet, you can refresh it by repainting the walls or by adding new doors. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clear out all the items in the closet. Sort through them to determine what you will keep and what you can give away or discard. Set the items you plan to keep aside.

2. Remove any closet rods or shelves. Take the closet doors off their rails or hinges. You may need to use a drill to unscrew the fixtures.

3. Place the drop cloth on the floor and mark off any areas you don't want to paint with the tape.

4. Apply a coat of primer to the closet's walls. Let it dry for at least several hours or overnight.

5. Apply a coat of the paint to all walls in the closet. Let it dry overnight.

6. Add new fixtures to the closet based on your needs and the size of the closet. For instance, if you have a lot of short jackets to hang in a narrow closet, you may want to hang two closet rods, one 3.5 feet above the floor and the second 3.5 feet above the first. Use one long rod in a wide closet, mounted 80 inches above the floor.

7. Attach a wall shelve above the top rod. You may need to drill holes first and insert anchors into the wall to secure the shelf. Use a level to make sure the shelf is even.

8. Fill storage bins with your family's hats, scarves and other outerwear accessories and place on the shelf.

9. Drill hooks into one side wall of the closet, if you have small children. Position the hooks low enough so children can easily reach them. Attach a touch light to the side wall. Place a shoe bench on the floor of the closet and stack your family's shoes on it.

10. Install the new closet doors if you like or simply rehang the old one. Have someone help you lift the door back onto the track or hold the door while you screw in the hinges.
