Decorating Ideas For Sliding Glass Doors

Sliding glass doors are often used to access sun porches, screened porches and backyard patios. Decorating options for sliding glass doors should take both spaces into consideration. The doors are typically focal points in each room so the decorative elements should reflect equally well on both sides of the doors. Does this Spark an idea?

Stained Glass Door

Transform a plain sliding glass door into a stained glass work of art using leading strips and stained glass paint. Select a brand of stained glass paint designed for vertical application and there is no need to remove the sliding glass door. Trace the desired stained glass pattern onto the door and then apply self-adhesive leading strips over the lead lines in the pattern. Apply the translucent paint between the leading strips to create the design. Light will still penetrate the stained glass paint, but you are adding an element of privacy to your room.

Glass Sun Catchers

Hang a glass sun catcher in the center of each sliding door panel to add color to the space without covering the doors. Make sure to select glass sun catchers that are flat enough to fit between the sliding door or sliding screen. Glass sun catchers are often made with painted glass so they are not as thick as real stained glass.

Beaded Curtain

Hang a crystal glass beaded curtain in front of a sliding glass door to add eclectic charm to your room. Thread crystal glass beads onto lengths of clear fishing line to create the individual strands for the curtain. Attach a curtain rod to the wall studs on each side of the sliding glass door. A beaded curtain large enough to cover a sliding glass door is heavy. Loop the beaded strands over the curtain rod. You can slide the beaded strands on the rod, tie them back out of the way or walk through them to pass through the sliding glass door.

Decorative Window Films

Static cling window films are another way to decorate both sides of a sliding glass door. Vinyl films are available in a variety of designs sized specifically for sliding glass doors. Designs include etched-style images such as bamboo stalks and colorful patterns such as magnolias and other flowers. The films cling to the glass, but you can remove them as needed. Place the films on one side of the glass door and the design patterns are visible from both sides. Clean the window films with soapy water to remove fingerprints and grime.
