Different types of fabrics require different types of storage, but they all need to be cleaned beforehand. Here are a few tips and tricks for keeping your clothes fresh and safe in storage. Does this Spark an idea?
Keeping It Clean
Insects and pests are attracted to dirt, food debris and perspiration. To keep these critters away from your stored clothes, always clean the garments before putting them in storage.
General Storage Rules
Clothes need to breathe. Don't store your clothes in airtight containers. Containers like rattan allow air to circulate. Storing clothes loosely also allows circulation. Additionally, you should store clothes in a dark place because light fades colors and attracts insects. Never put clothes where they will be subjected to extreme temperatures, such as in a basement, cellar or attic. Keep moisture out by adding desiccants to the container to absorb moisture and prevent mildew.
Storing Leather, Suede and Wool
Leather and suede clothing should be covered with white muslin. Supple leather garments and wool also should be laid flat and padded with white tissue.
Storing Linen and Metallic Fabrics
These garments should be rolled rather than folded to prevent creases. Like suede and leather, linen also should be covered with white muslin. Metallic fabrics should be rolled as well but with muslin or tissue paper between the fabrics.
Storing Knitted Clothes and Silk
These should be stored flat. However, if they must be hung up, they should be well-padded with tissue and covered with muslin.
Storing Fur
Fur should be stored similarly to leather garments. However, it is a good idea to store them professionally in cold storage.
