Interior Closet Ideas

A pole and a shelf is one of the more common set ups for the interior of a closet, but it does not address everyone's individual needs.

From home to home, the interior of closets look relatively similar. There is a single shelf and a pole to hang clothing from, often constructed of wire or wood. This "one size fits all" closet style does not, in fact, suit every lifestyle, wardrobe or storage issue. While bringing in a custom closet designer to size up your needs and create a perfect space for you is good (if you can afford it and want to pay for it), it is, by no means, your only way to achieve a custom interior closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Shoe Spaces and Racks

If you have a large collection of shoes, a flimsy plastic shoe hanger or a mountain of shoe boxes is not going to work very well. If you have invested in your shoes, also invest in creating the perfect space to keep them organized. Sturdy, angled wooden shoe racks keep the shoes in order and on display, making it easier to find and retrieve the right pair. Shoe cubbies can do the job as well, displaying the pairs so they are accessible and within reach. If your closet is large, place a bench in your closet along with a low angled mirror, like they use in shoe stores. This way, you can try shoes on easily and choose just the right pair.

Storage Shelves

Regardless of whether the closet is for clothing or general storage, adding more shelves is a good way to convert more of the closet into workable storage space. Line one or two walls with shelves. If you are afraid to take away space from your hanging garments, consider installing a second shelf below your first, or even a third above it, if your closet is tall; this extra space is ideal for garments you wear infrequently but don't wish to get rid of.

Lighting

It is hard to find anything in a dim closet. Invest in your closet's lighting, even if it is small. Use small floor-level lights to illuminate shoes lined along the floor. For your main lighting, don't rely on a single, overhead source. Place several lights in the ceiling to illuminate all of the areas of the closet, and add a few lights behind sconces on unoccupied wall areas to illuminate objects at eye-level.
