Use a drill for pilot holes to install a folding vinyl closet door.
You can use a vinyl folding door to replace a closet door. Vinyl folding door kits are less expensive than other types of doors. In addition, using a vinyl folding door can save you a lot of space compared to a louvered door or a standard hinged door. Another advantage to using a folding closet door is that you can install it yourself in a short period of time. You can find vinyl door kits on the shelf at a home improvement center in a variety of colors and sizes. Custom sizes and models can be ordered as well. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Measure the closet door width and measure the height on the left, in the middle and on the right. Use the width and the shortest height measurement to purchase a vinyl folding door set for your closet. Most off-the-shelf kits are adjustable, so cut the length to fit, if necessary, with a utility knife.
2. Position the top track of the vinyl folding door set at the top of the closet door opening. If the track is too long, saw it to the proper length and remove all metal particles. Use a pencil to mark the track's proper position and drill pilot holes at the marks.
3. Stand the vinyl folding door on end. Slide the metal track onto the hanging wheels that will now be at the top.
4. Place the track and door in the closet doorway. You will probably need a helper for this step. Hold the top track in the position you marked in Step 2. Push the vinyl folding door to one side and screw the open side of the track into the top of the doorway.
5. Push the folding door to the other side of the track and screw the track into place on the other end.
6. Slide the vinyl folding door to its closed position so that it covers the closet doorway and hangs freely. Use a pencil to mark the location of the screw holes on the side of the folding door that will be anchored to the doorjamb. Drill pilot holes at the marks and screw that side of the door to the doorjamb.
7. Place the locking track of the vinyl folding door kit on the opposite side of the doorjamb. Place the top end so it touches the top track and ensure it runs down the middle of the doorjamb face. Saw it to size if it is too long.
8. Check to be sure the closet door will close properly with the track in this position. Mark the screw holes with a pencil, drill pilot holes and screw the track to the doorjamb. Now, you should be able to close and lock the vinyl folding closet door.
