Get rid of an old TV safely by recycling it.
If you've decided to replace your old analog TV set with a more updated TV or you're planning to upgrade your current flat-screen television for a larger model, you may be looking for ways to get rid of your old electronics. Because TVs and some other electronics contain significant amounts of mercury, silver, barium, cadmium and toxic lead, disposing of them improperly can be harmful to the environment, reports the Delaware-based Coastal Point newspaper. There are several convenient ways to get rid of old electronics without throwing them away.
Instructions
1. Consider giving your old electronics to friends or family who can benefit from products that are in good condition.
2. Donate your old electronics to local charities such as The Salvation Army or Goodwill. Both of these charities accept electronics that are in good working condition and will also provide you with a tax-deduction receipt.
3. Sell your old electronics online. If you have a newer model TV set, computer, MP3 player or other popular item you can get rid of your old electronics and earn some money towards some new ones.
4. Offer your old electronics for free in an online classified. Many people will jump at the chance to pick up a TV set if they don't have to pay for it.
5. Trade in your old TV or electronics. There are many stores that offer gift cards or gift certificates in exchange for old computers, TVs and phones. Some of these stores include BestBuy.com, Walmart.com, Costco.com, RadioShack.com and TigerDirect.com.
6. Contact local repair shops to see if they're willing to take old electronics that are in need of repairs. Many repair shops use old parts from electronics or repair and resell them as refurbished products. Some will even pay you for your items.
7. Visit Earth911.com to find a local recycling center that takes old TVs and electronics. Also try contacting the manufacturer of your old TV. According to Dayton Daily News in Dayton, Ohio, LG and Sony are two electronics manufacturers that offer TV recycling programs.
8. Call your local Best Buy store or visit BestBuy.com to find out more about Best Buy's recycling program. According to Best Buy, they'll accept nearly all electronics, up to two items per day, including TVs. Best Buy charges a fee to recycle some electronics.
