Make Clothes Fit In A Small Closet

Organize your closet to fit more clothing.

Even if you do not consider yourself to be a fashion icon, clothing accumulates over years and can quickly fill a small closet. Just because your closet is small, however, does not mean that it needs to be hectic and cluttered. In fact, a small closet can be organized to fit all of the clothing that you need for the current season. With some reorganization and closet modifications, you can transform a chaotic storage space into a well-organized wardrobe. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove everything from the closet, including items on the shelves and floor.

2. Inspect the items that you removed and place pieces that you no longer wear into a box. These items can be donated to a local charity or homeless shelter.

3. Separate your clothing, shoes and accessories into piles according to the season(s) they can be worn in.

4. Pack out-of-season clothing into separate boxes; use a market to label the boxes with a description of their contents.

5. Install a tension curtain rod about 3 feet below the built-in rod of the closet. To do so, twist the rod to expand it and hold it in place below the built-in rod. Continue twisting the rod to create a tight fit between the walls of the closet.

6. Hang your regular hangers onto space-saving cascading hanger rods. Cascading hanger rods are plastic or metal strips with several holes or notches along them and a hook at each end. Slip the hooks of the regular hangers into the holes on the strip and hang the strip's hook on the rod in the closet to increase the amount of clothing you can hang in one space.

7. Place a small dresser inside the closet, if possible, to hold sweaters and other bulky items. If you do not have room for a small dresser due to the lower tension rod, hang a canvas closet organizer directly from the upper rod. Canvas organizers feature cubed cubbyholes for clothing storage and make use of vertical space.

8. Replace the clothing that fits the current season into the closet. To make the most use of your new closet design, hang your tops on the built-in rod and your bottoms on the new tension rod.

9. Place in-season shoes on the floor in a neat row and place your accessories on a shelf or hang them in a garment bag.

10. Place the boxes of out-of-season clothing into a storage area, or stack them neatly off to one side of the closet floor.
