Install A Sliding Closet Door On The Bottom Track

Install a Sliding Closet Door on the Bottom Track

One of the most heavily used doors in a home is a sliding closet door. Whether the door has slipped off track unintentionally, because of dirt in the track or roller misalignment, or the door has simply been removed for new carpeting or remodeling, the procedure to install and adjust a sliding closet door is simple and can be completed in a few minutes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the derailed sliding door by lifting it up, then swinging the bottom of the door away from the track to allow removing the top of the door from its channel in the top track.

2. Rest the sliding closet door panel removed in Step 1 on its side to access the bottom roller mechanisms. Inspect the condition of the bottom roller mechanisms to verify the rollers move freely and the roller wheels are not frozen or damaged. Install replacement roller mechanisms, if necessary.

3. Adjust the bottom rollers at both edges of the door by turning the roller adjustment screw counterclockwise using a screwdriver until the edge of the roller wheels extend approximately 1/8 inch below the bottom edge of the door frame. The roller adjustment screw is typically located through a small hole in the door edges near the bottom corner.

4. Stand the door upright and position it next to the closet door opening. For the outside door unit, place the door at the approximate midpoint of the opening on the exterior side. For the inside door unit, position the door in the interior side of the opening at the approximate midpoint.

5. Lift the door unit upward to slide the top of the door frame into the appropriate channel in the top track, then swing the bottom of the door frame inward to align the bottom rollers with the roller fin on the bottom track. The inside door must be inserted into the inside track channel and onto the inside roller fin, and the outer door unit must be inserted into the outside channel of the top track and onto the outer roller fin on the bottom track.

6. Access the roller adjustment screws and adjust them equally by turning them clockwise, raising the door evenly to where approximately 1/4 inch of roller is exposed below the bottom edge of the door frame. Slide the door laterally in both directions to verify smooth operation of the rollers.

7. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 to install the adjacent sliding closet door unit.
