Closet Options

Closets may provide additional space for purposes other than storage or clothing

Typically the most underutilized space in most houses, closets become repositories for everything from shoes to sporting goods. Everyone wants that closet organized, useful and free of clutter, but nobody wants to make time to actually make that space more efficient and functional. When approaching the daunting task of cleaning and organizing a closet, sort through all items, throw out the junk, evaluate and adjust the new space. When finally cleaned and organized, consider these closet options before making a final decision on that newly available space. Does this Spark an idea?

Transform the Space

Move the items in a large closet to another storage area and use the closet as a functional room for a hobby or a small office. Electrical power may not exist so consider hiring a qualified electrician to properly install the necessary outlets for a computer, lighting and even a television. Running an extension cord in the new closet/office will not work well and may present other dangers. In the absence of windows, consider installing full spectrum lights that simulate daylight. Available in different formats, these products include individual light bulbs, desk lamps and thin wall-mounted sunshine simulators.

Closet Organizing Systems

The many different types and methods of closet organizing systems include steel wire, melamine and solid wood construction. Sometimes a simple set of shelves will provide the additional space to organize items. Other times, too much stuff may require the use of a complex organizational system. Professional space consultants provide useful options and advice for organizing a closet. Most home improvement stores carry a wide selection of do-it-yourself closet and space organizing components.

Space Saving Options

Perhaps you need some additional space, or you need to make better use of the available space in your closet. Consider installing pull down closet rods. Available in 18- to 48-inch lengths, these clothing rods pull down to allow access, then push back up out of the way. A closet clothes hamper may be hidden inside a shelf area and slide out for easy access saving a lot of space and unnecessary clutter. For storing jewelry, consider a large locking wood jewelry cabinet. This shallow cabinet fits into an existing wall and has a full length mirror on the door.

Smart Closet Organizers

In a smaller closet, the lack of space seems too small for a single chair. A chair valet stand provides the perfect solution for comfortable seating while you put on your stockings and shoes. You may also hang clothing on the back hanger and store items in the deep storage drawer under the chair seat. To free up additional closet space, combine the use of vacuum bags for long-term storage of seasonal items with under-bed plastic or wood storage organizers. Lastly, the common standing shoe rack remains one of the smartest closet options for organizing shoes easily viewed in a vertically stacked pattern.
