Closet Basics

Simple changes make closets more effective.

Your closet becomes the storage area for all the things in your life. You need to know about repairing, maintaining and remodeling this important section of your room. Basic knowledge is all that is required to make these simple changes, but they go a long way towards making the closet a better storage area. Does this Spark an idea?

Basic Repairs

Making closet repairs is essential because they make the closet more useful. Fix a sagging center pole by taking out the pole, unscrewing the bracket and removing it from the wall. Patch the wall with drywall joint compound or spackle. You can hang a new bracket a few inches away from the old one. Install a new center pole, one that isn't warped and that will keep your clothes from dragging on the floor. The same goes for shelving. Remove the old shelf, and take out the brackets. Spackle over the old mounting holes, and reinstall the brackets for a better, more secure fit.

Add New Shelves

New shelves make a closet more useful and creates more storage. Factor in how high each new shelf should be before installing it. Divide your things into piles the way you want them to be organized. Place shirts together, boots and shoes, and leave more room for sports equipment, handbags and odds and ends you don't want to store in your room. Measure the piles before you design the shelving. If you aren't handy, buy shelving made to go inside closets. Cube shelves are a favorite choice.

Use Storage Crates

Another idea is to buy simple crates and plastic tubs to hold loose items in your closet. Placing all those loose items into a crate frees up lots of space and reduces clutter. A see-through plastic container with a lid is the ideal choice because you can see what is in it; therefore, you won't have to rummage through the bin to find something. If you have opaque containers, label them with tape and a marker to make your items more accessible.

Fix Broken Doors

Broken doors are a real pain and a common repair item. To fix sliding doors, inspect the track and remove foreign objects. Lift the door up and off the track. Remove the roller wheels on the bottom of the door, and replace them with new parts from a hardware store. Remount these wheels if they are simply loose by unscrewing them, filling in the old mounting holes and mounting them to the doors again. Adjust your bifold doors by sliding the bottom hinge pin in the corner of the door to the left or right, which tilts the door, making it more flush and aligned with the door jamb.
