Make your closet work.
You can create your own homemade closet system custom designed for your needs and budget. A well-designed closet offers storage and organization while maximizing the space available. Build an organizer that offers hanging storage, space for folded clothing, and plenty of room for accessories whether your closet is tiny or you have a large walk-in. Does this Spark an idea?
Planning and Design
Measure the space you have available in your closet. With your wardrobe in front of you, determine what you need to store and how much space to allot to each kind of storage. Take the time to clean out your closet, donating or disposing of items you don't need or wear. Use graph paper to sketch out a rough design for your closet. Use the space on the backs of doors, side walls, and allow for high shelves to make the most of vertical space.
Reuse, Recycle and Repurpose
If you don't have carpentry skills and would prefer to avoid tackling power tools, you can create a homemade closet system using purchased, accessible components. Look around the house for dressers, bookshelves, or small cabinets that you might already own, or visit thrift and discount stores for pieces that can work with your closet system design. Use a dresser for sweaters, T-shirts and underwear, but also for shoes, winter hats and gear, or jewelry and accessories. Bookshelves can hold shoes, bags, or folded items just as easily as they can books. Paint various pieces to the same color for a unified look.
Build Your Own
Plywood is the ideal material if you want to build your own closet system. Plan your closet system to make the most of a sheet or two of plywood, sizing shelves and compartments accordingly. If you plan to use baskets or bins in your closet system, measure them then plan your shelving to fit. Cut plywood at home with a table saw or have your cuts done at the home improvement center. Assemble simple shelving units and cubby style shelves using wood screws. Secure individual units to wall studs in your closet to create a durable closet organizer.
