Organizing Tips

Organize one room each weekend until you reach your goals.

An organized home helps life run more efficiently, because everything is where you need it. Buy plastic bins, boxes and other organization tools before tackling the monumental task of clearing out your clutter. Focus on one room at a time, and work your way through the house. First throw away all the items that you don't need, such as old mail, garbage and clothing with holes. Does this Spark an idea?

Use Clear Pantry Containers

Woman's Day magazine recommends using clear glass pantry canisters to organize your dry goods. Choose containers with square bottoms, because these take up less space in your pantry and cupboards. Select various sizes to store different items, such as spaghetti noodles, beans, coffee and other dry goods. These canisters are available in department stores or online. Mark each container with white labels.

Keep Your Desk Clear

Keep your desk clear at all times by shredding old documents and keeping your files organized. Spend five minutes at the end of each day organizing your desk and other tools to prevent paper buildup. Avoid stuffing papers in drawers; instead, put each paper or other item where it needs to go. Making this a habit will help you maintain a more efficient office.

Utilize Shelves

Utilize shelves in all your closets, and install extra shelves in your office. Store items that you don't use frequently but still want in boxes on your closet shelves. Keep office supplies and other materials in decorative boxes on shelves within your office. Label each box accordingly so your items are easy to find.

Sell or Give Away Old Books

Sell or give away books that take up excess space, especially if you haven't read these books and you have no idea when you will have the time. Store books that are family heirlooms or old classics that you just can't get rid of in boxes within the closet or under your bed.

Place an Organizer Chest by the Front Door

An organizer chest usually goes at the end of a bed, in a closet or right near the front door. Place your wooden chest just under the coat rack, and use it to store extra shoes, soccer balls or other items that you might need as you are leaving your home. Some chests come equipped with cushions so you can sit on them while putting your shoes on. These chests are usually found in department stores.

Designate Drawers for Similar Items

Place hair ties, brushes and other accessories in one drawer within your bathroom. Designate another drawer for personal hygiene items, such as deodorant and cleansing wipes. You can also use this same concept all throughout your home. Choose a drawer in your kitchen for all baking utensils, and select another drawer for all hand towels. This is a simple idea, but it works well.
