Organize Your Small Walkin Closet

Small walk-in closets can create big storage problems.

Although many new homes have the luxury of three or more bedrooms, it is often closet space that is sacrificed to provide the additional room. Fortunately, there are simple ways to organize a small walk-in closet that won't take a lot of time, or cost a lot of money. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove all items from your closet. Dust and vacuum the closet while it is empty.

2. Divide articles of clothing into piles. Keep only the clothes you are certain you will wear. Donate any usable items to charity. Toss out all items that can't be worn due to stains and tears.

3. Purchase multi-pant hangers to minimize the amount of space used for dress clothes. This type of hanger allows you to hang more than one pair of pants on each hanger and to group similar colors and types of clothing together.

4. Use tote boxes to store out-of-season clothes items. Place the tote boxes on the top shelf of the closet, or store totes under the bed to provide more room in the closet.

5. Save valuable floor space for totes and bins by storing shoes in a shoe organizer. This handy device slips over the top of the door and has clear plastic inserts for shoes. You may also use this type of organizer for scarves or other types of accessories.

6. Hang hooks on the wall for purses, belts and scarves. Keep shelf areas free for sweaters and jeans by using metal or wood knobs and hooks for hanging accessories.

7. Use a vertical tie and belt rack. This rack hangs like a regular hanger from the closet rod, but can hold a multitude of ties or belts.

8. Place colorful storage bins on the floor to store purses and other accessories. Consider storage bins that also do double-duty as footstools to allow you to reach items on higher shelves.
