Things To Keep In A Hall Closet

A hall closet serves more than one purpose.

If storage is at a premium in your home, think about maximizing and organizing your closet space. Hall closets, often catchalls for everything from apparel to paper products, are perfect candidates for overhauls. Step back and look at their full potential, and you will find more efficient ways to put your hall closets to use. Does this Spark an idea?

Clothing and Shoes

If your hall closet is located close to an entrance door, near the front foyer or mud room, chances are it contains a variety of clothing and footwear as well as some space for visitors' outerwear. A closet organizer system, over the-door storage for shoes, double rods, and storage bins and baskets are all ways to organize this hall closet for maximum storage space.

Linens

Hall closets located close to bathrooms and bedrooms are perfect for storing towels and bedding. Keep your linen closet neat by taking the time to fold the towels, washcloths and bedding before placing them on the shelves. Arranging them according to color or assigning each bedroom its own shelf or spot in the closet makes it easier for family members to find what they are looking for and saves time when you are putting clean items away. Make use of every square inch by storing bathroom cleaning and paper products in the hall linen closet.

Food

If your have a hall closet that is underutilized and not enough food storage, consider repurposing it as a pantry. Adding some shelves, either with a closet-organizing system or installing wooden shelves you craft yourself, will create space to store canned goods, baking supplies, paper, and cleaning products. Remove the door for the casual look of open shelving or switch it out for a vintage screen door for a country vibe.

Appliances

Using a hall closet to store appliances frees up counter and cupboard space. Line the top of the space with shelves for things such as mixers, bread makers, food processors and juicers and use the bottom for larger items like vacuum cleaners and rug shampooers. In homes where space is tight and there isn't room for a traditional laundry area, hall closets can be converted to laundry rooms with stackable washers and dryers.

Craft Supplies

If you are a crafter without a dedicated craft room, chances are you have craft supplies tucked in drawers, bins and closets all over the house. Pull it all together by repurposing a hall closet as a craft storage area.
