Common Interior Door Sizes

Most interior doors are made in a few common widths.

Door sizes can be confusing to the uninitiated. Ordering and reordering doors due to inaccurate sizing can be time consuming and costly. Interior doors come in several standard sizes and being familiar with those can help when interpreting the tape measure readings. When sizing doors, especially standard interior doors, the primary dimension to concern yourself with is the width. Doors are always constructed with widths in even inches, any variation is due to planing or trimming done after initial installation to make the door a better fit. Does this Spark an idea?

Door Heights

Minimum door sizes are governed by building codes. In homes newer than 1980 the height for all passage doors must be a minimum of 80 inches. The 80-inch height is designed to aid in proper air flow, especially in the case of fire to give you more time to escape. Most doors will be exactly 80 inches tall. Custom doors are frequently taller and special-use doors, such as those for storage closets may be shorter but will need to be ordered to fit each opening. There are no other standard heights.

Closet and Utility Doors

Closets and utility areas have doors that are typically narrower than standard passage doors, although in homes constructed in the past 20 years most are a minimum of 30 inches. Closet, utility and bathroom doors in homes built before 1990 can be as narrow as 18 inches. Most of these doors are 24 or 28 inches wide and a standard height of 80 inches.

Passage Doors

A passage door is one that leads from one section to another, typically from one room into another. The more traffic an area is expected to get the wider these doors will be. The smallest passage doors commonly used are 24 inches wide. These are found in older homes as entrance doors to small bathrooms or between bedrooms. Doors that are 26 and 28 inches are less common but still considered standard sizes as the main entrances into some rooms. Thirty- and 32-inch passage doors are the most common and may be found throughout the interior of most houses. The widest passage doors commonly used are 36 inches wide and are usually found only in larger homes as the entrance to master bedrooms or other larger rooms.
