Adjust Folding Doors

French doors, pocket doors and sliding doors are just a few of the many different styles of doors that you can hang in the doorways of your home. Folding doors are usually found in the doorways of closets. Folding doors hang from a track that hangs along the top of the doorway. Because of the way that folding doors work, they can become difficult to open if they hang unevenly. You can make your folding doors hang evenly and open smoothly with some simple adjustments that will only take you a few minutes to make. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Check to make sure that the folding doors are both on the track. You will find pins on the top of each door. These pins push into the door so that each door can be taken down and put back up should you want to paint them or replace them. Push the pin into the door and pop it back on the track if one of the doors has come off of the track on the top. Older folding doors may also have a track along the bottom with a pin that holds each door in place. Check to make sure that the doors are in on the bottom if you're folding doors have a bottom track.

2. Close the folding doors and examine the doors in relation to the door frame and to each other. Measure the gap between the two doors at the top. Open the doors and loosen the bracket in the top track for each door, one at a time, and slide them in toward the center half the length of the gap between the two doors minus 1/16 of an inch. Close the doors to make sure that there is not only an 1/8 of an inch gap between the two doors at the top.

3. Move the pin in the bottom of the door each door into a different notch until the gap between the bottom of the two doors is an 1/8 of an inch. Older folding doors may require you to adjust the bottom gap between the two doors in the same manner as you adjusted the top gap between the two doors as some older folding doors have a track on the top and the bottom.

4. Use wood shims or a stack of magazines to adjust the height of the door so that it is level. Then, using either needle-nose or a wrench to tighten or loosen the the lower pin. You want to tighten the pin if the doors need lowered or loosen the pin if the doors need to be heightened.
