Tips For A House With No Storage Space

There are a variety of storage options for a home without storage space.

A house without closets, an attic or basement poses a storage challenge when there exists a need to store clothes, holiday items, household cleaning supplies and other items. Items don't have to be piled into corners or in the middle of the floor. There are storage options for the home that don't require a fortune to hire someone to construct closets or other storage cabinets in the home. Does this Spark an idea?

Vacuum Storage Bags

Purchase vacuum storage bags and use the bags to store seasonal bedding and clothing not often used. The bags are waterproof and items won't mold inside of the bags. Vacuum storage bags compress to the size of a small box once air is removed from the bags with a vacuum cleaner's hose attachment. Place the compressed bags under the bed or behind a piece of furniture. Vacuum storage bags are available at retail and home improvement stores as well as online.

Over-The-Door Storage Pouches

Use over-the-door storage pouches to store shoes, toiletries, toys and other small items if the home has no storage space in the bathroom or bedroom. Purchase two pouches and place one on each side of the bathroom or bedroom door. Place smaller items in the one on the front of the door and larger items on the pouch on the inside of the door.

Hooks

Attach two to four large hooks on one wall in a bedroom, hallway or other room in the home. Hang coats, hats and other clothing onto these hooks. If hanging clothing, place the clothing in a garment bag to keep dust and moths away from the clothing.

Garage Loft Storage

If the home contains a garage with an exposed loft (rafters in the ceiling), use the loft space to store holiday and items not used often. Place a piece of plywood over the loft's rafters and place the items on the plywood. To keep bugs out of these items, seal the boxes in a tarp that is breathable so the items won't rot and mildew or mold won't form inside of the boxes.

Behind and Under Furniture

Place items like brooms, mops, pictures, unused electronic equipment and other flat items behind and underneath furniture like sofas, free-standing cabinets, beds, dressers and chests. Wrap electronic items and pictures in a piece of cloth to keep dust off the items.

Dual-Purpose Furniture

Purchase furniture, like coffee tables and entertainment centers, that contain built-in drawers and use the drawers to store papers, DVD and music discs and other small items. Consider purchasing a bookcase headboard bed and store personal items in the headboard or purchase additional nightstands for storage.

Recycling Items

Keep coffee cans, jars, butter and other food containers for storing paper clips, buttons, screws, nails, project items and other items in the home office, kitchen or garage.

Install Pullout Shelving and Baskets

Install pullout shelving and baskets in any base cabinets present in the home including the kitchen and bathroom. Pullout shelves and baskets are available at retail and home improvement stores as well as online.
