Make A Closet Without Walls

A closet rack doesn't have to be attached to the wall.

If you're repurposing a room such as turning a basement into a bedroom, you may end up with sleeping and dressing space without a closet. If you consider your needs in a closet, you have to have shelf space and a rack on which to hang clothes, but you don't necessarily need to have solid walls. Separate your clothing storage area with tall bookshelves and you'll have the visual effect of a closet without having to build any actual walls. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Place four bookshelves in two parallel lines facing each other. Set the shelves at least 6 feet apart, or wide enough to accommodate the rolling clothing rack in between.

2. Cover the floor in the closet area with a light-colored rug. This will make the area look larger and will keep dirt from any clothing that may accidentally fall.

3. Place a rolling clothing rack at the back of the closet area. This will define the back limit of the alcove. Lock the wheels on the rack when you have it in place.

4. Stick adhesive lights on the ceiling above the alcove and to the top shelves of the bookcases. Aim the lights so that you can see your clothing easily when they are lit.

5. Stock your closet alcove by hanging clothing on hangers on the rolling rack and stacking shoes, sweaters, hats and other items of clothing on the open shelves.
