Organize Storage Containers

Storing Christmas ornaments and holiday decor together will make them easy to locate.

Storage containers are a necessity in every home. They cut down on clutter and enable you to store things in appropriate areas where you can locate them quickly. The containers allow the person to stash them in attics, closets, under beds and other areas while protecting the items from dust, insects and mildew. Keeping your home organized with storage containers will save you time in locating certain items. It will also save you money by storing them safely, such as seasonal clothing and collectible Christmas ornaments. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Label the storage container clearly by using a sticky label, an index card taped onto the end or by using a permanent marker. This will enable you to see quickly what is inside the container, preventing you from having to open it and go through the contents.

2. Use bubble wrap, Styrofoam peanuts or even wadded up newspapers to wrap around delicate or breakable items before storing them.

3. Pack heavier items on the bottom of the container and add lighter items on top. This will prevent things from being broken or crushed. Do not load the box with so many items that you cannot lift it without additional help.

4. Place similar items in the same container, such as Christmas ornaments and other decorative holiday items together. This prevents you from having a label with multiple items on the list that don't really belong together, thus wasting time checking every container for the item.

5. Stack containers on top of each other on the floor of attics, basements and closets. This will make use of the vertical space. Make sure you place the containers you will use least on the bottom and the most frequently used containers on top. For instance, if a large plastic tub is opened frequently to deposit clothing for charities that your children have outgrown, stack it on top. Conversely, the Christmas ornament container needs to be on bottom.

6. Store items near the area where you will use them. For instance, if you store extra quilts and blankets for the winter months, place them into storage boxes that fit underneath your bed. Store scrapbooking items wherever you work on your hobby, such as the game room, den or office area.
