Closet rods are hung at different heights, depending on your closet layout.
When designing a new closet or refurbishing an old closet, a grasp of the typical heights of closet rods is necessary to allow proper planning of the storage space and garment hanging space in your new closet. Different heights are required for different types of clothes hanging as well, another variable to consider. Does this Spark an idea?
Normal Closet Rod Height
The normal height of a closet rod is 45 inches. This height, just under 4 feet, is suitable for almost anyone of average size. It is about chest high on adults. The height allows any garment, from a pair of pants to a shirt, to hang without dragging on the floor below. At this height, additional room below the rod is available for shoe storage. Above the rod, there is 4 feet of space for shelving if your home has 8-foot high ceilings. Typically, a shelf is installed over the rod, and additional shelving is installed on top in increments of 8 to 18 inches, depending on the size of items stored.
Low-hanging Rods
A low-hanging rod installed at 39 inches accommodates more shelf space above. It also makes the shelving more accessible simply by reaching. At this height, pants and shirts hang without dragging along the floor, but the second shelf, hung above the shelf right over the closet rod, is more easily accessed. Larger individuals looking to add shelving above their closet rod choose this height as do those who hang a minimum amount of long garments.
Tall-hanging Closet Rods
A taller hanging closet rod is ideal if you store dresses and coats in a closet. At 60 or 65 inches high, any gown, dress or trench coat will hang without dragging. This is the height of many closet rods as trench coats typically hang in a coat closet. If you plan to store anything that takes up more vertical space than 45 inches, install your closet rod at this height. Or, install a short section of rod at this height, and install the longer section at the normal hanging height.
Double Rods
A double rod is two individual closet rods hung one over the other. This set-up allows for double the clothes hanging space inside any closet. It does not allow for additional shelving, however. Double rods hang at 80 and 40 inches, which gives 40 inches of clear space to hang clothes from each. It's ideal for the walk-in closet because additional room is available to install shelves, cabinets and drawers in space beside the double rods.
