Standard Closets

Closets come in many different shapes, sizes and dimensions.

When designing a home or building a new closet in an older home, it helps to have some basic knowledge of the standard closet sizes. This assists you during the planning phase, providing a grounding in the minimum size for each type of closet. Before you build, take in some facts about standard closet sizes. Does this Spark an idea?

Bedroom Closet Sizes

A bedroom closet is the most common in any home. This closet hangs clothing and stores other necessities and gear. The closet is at least 24 inches deep, allowing plenty of room to hang up a shirt inside the closet space. At this depth, most clothes will not brush against the wall or doors when closed. The closet may be deeper, up to 30 inches, if larger coats and more storage room is needed. If additional shelving is needed, the closet may be built deeper and shelves added along the side walls on the closet.

Closet Widths

The width of the closet is another dimension to consider. Bedroom closets require a closet rod 4-feet long to hang up one person's clothes. If two people will use the closet, there needs to be at least 8 feet of rod space. Since rods may hang one on top of another, a total of 4 feet of space is sufficient for a two-person bedroom closet. If additional shoe and sweater storage shelving is needed, the width of these shelves is added to the closet rod width. Typically, bedroom closets are between 6 and 8 feet wide, leaving plenty of room for a double rod and additional shelves.

Coat Closets

A coat closet is another type of closet. While there is no standard size, all coat closets are at least 28 inches deep, to furnish enough space to hang up a large winter coat. The closet is always the same height as the interior walls, and it is as wide as 8 feet in some cases. Generally speaking, about six coats and jackets will hang comfortably in every foot of closet rod space. That means in a standard 3-foot-wide coat closet, six coats will hang. Coat closets typically range in size from 3 to 4 feet wide to accommodate all the coats each family member owns.

Walk In Closets

A walk-in closet typically does not adhere to standard sizing. It is always as tall as the surrounding walls and ceiling, since the walk-in closet is built into the room simply by erecting closet walls inside the room. The closet contains areas to hang clothing, which requires at least 2 feet of depth from the back wall. In addition, the walk-in has room for shelving and room to walk into the closet. Walk-ins range in size from 5 feet wide and 6 feet long to 12 feet wide and 15 feet long -- the size of a small bedroom.
