Attaching storage cubes to a wall is a great way to add additional storage space for books or to display artwork such as vases and treasured photographs. In addition, mounting multiple storage cubes on a wall serves as part of the room's decor and spruces up a bare space. Since the cubes themselves are often heavy, as well as what you place in them, you must attach them securely to support the weight. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Set one of the storage cubes on a sturdy work surface with the bottom edge facing upward, if relevant.
2. Place an L bracket on top of the cube and slide it to one left side of one edge of the cube so the vertical arm of the bracket is aligned with the edge. Insert a 1/4- to 1/2-inch long screw through the two holes in the bracket to attach it to the cube. The length of the screw depends on the thickness of the cube.
3. Repeat the process to install another L bracket on the right side of the cube using the same procedure. Pick up the cube by the brackets to ensure that they feel sturdy and do not wobble.
4. Hold the cube up to the wall in the desired location with the brackets on the bottom and against the wall. Use a pencil to make a small mark in each of the screw holes on the bracket arms that touch the wall.
5. Set the cubes aside and insert a 1/4-inch drill bit into a drill. Create a hole in each marked location until you break through to the inside of the wall. Then insert a plastic wall anchor into each hole, tapping it in gently with a hammer.
6. Hold the cube back up to the wall and align the screw holes in the bracket with the underlying wall anchors. Insert a 1-inch long screw through a bracket hole using a screwdriver and tighten until it will no longer turn. Repeat for the number of screws needed.
7. Mount additional storage cubes to the wall using the same method.
