Organize A Small Closet On A Small Budget

Take some time to organize your closet.

If searching for items in your small closet has become a struggle, it is time to bring order to the closet. According to organizing expert and author of "Organizing From the Inside Out" Julie Morgenstern, the clutter in your closet represents an attachment to something deeper that you are struggling to release. Organizing your closet can be a starting point for bringing order to your life. The only thing you may have to spend a lot of when organizing your small closet is time. The reward for the fruit of your labor will be a life and closet that is clutter-free. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove everything from the closet, including items on the floor.

2. Sort through the items from the closet and organize them into piles. For example, put the pants in a "pants" pile, and the shirts in a "shirts" pile. If you like, you can even color coordinate your piles; put the pink pants in a "pink pants" pile, and the blue shirts in a "blue shirts" pile, etc.

3. Discard everything you don't need, use or wear anymore.

4. Install wire shelves in your closet. Affix the shelves in an easy-to-reach area in the closet so you will have access to the items you place on the shelves. Purchase the shelves at most home improvement stores for anywhere from $10 to $16, depending on the size of the shelf.

5. Place out-of-season clothing items in plastic storage boxes to make room for clothing items that are in season. For example, if it is summer, you can put your winter clothes in a storage box.

6. Place the storage boxes on the floor of your closet. Stack the boxes to maximize closet space.

7. Hang your clothing items back in your closet on space-saving hangers. Purchase these hangers--which allow clothes to be hung vertically instead of horizontally--from most hardware stores or online for $7 to $10 for three to five hangers. One hanger can generally hold five to seven pieces of clothing. Hang like items together.

8. Place items such as hats, shoes and purses on the shelves that you installed in the closet. You can organize these items by color and type.
