Master Closet Design Ideas

The master closet provides an area to store clothes and get dressed.

The master bedroom closet in your home is more than just a place to store your clothing. A well-designed master closet can serve as a dressing area and place to prepare for an evening out, get ready for work and pack for a trip with all of your belongings right where you need them. Does this Spark an idea?

Dressing Closets

If you are lucky enough to have the space in your master closet for a dressing area, you can create a dressing closet that includes mirrors and an area to prepare for your day. For those with an extra bedroom in the home, the room can substitute for a master closet and provide plenty of space for a dressing closet. Install shelving, hanging bars, shoe racks and a vanity to create a dressing room.

Vertical Space

To make the most of the storage capacity of the master bedroom closet, use all of the space from the floor to the ceiling. Store rarely used items on the top shelves, and keep a step stool nearby to reach the items when necessary. Use wicker baskets on the top shelves to keep items neat and organized.

Hanging Rods

Two rows of bars doubles the capacity for hanging items in the closet. Hang items such as shorter skirts and tops on the lower hanging bars. If space is limited in the closet, hang the items that are in season and store out-of-season clothing on the shelves to keep the clothing that you are currently wearing within easy access.

Seating Area

In closets with enough space, include an area to sit while dressing. A vanity provides you with a place to put on jewelry and makeup if the light is sufficient in the master closet. A bench seat in the closet gives you a place to put on shoes.

Lighting

A large walk-in closet must provide sufficient lighting so that you can find clothing and dress for the day. Include overhead lights to find items in the closet, and install task lighting on the vanity to prepare for the day. A lighted mirror generates enough light for you to apply makeup, fix your hair and put on jewelry while getting dressed.
