Make A Small Bedroom Less Crowded

The space beneath beds provides room for extra storage.

A small bedroom looks crowded if the space is too dark or cluttered, or if it has the wrong color choices. The goal is to maximize the available square footage. It is not difficult to make your small bedroom look and be less crowded if you use the correct furniture and color scheme, and you utilize all available storage space to give the room an open, airy ambiance. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Purchase a twin- or full-size bed for the bedroom, if this is an option. Queen- and king-size beds take up a great deal of space in small bedrooms. If the area is for one person only, or is used infrequently for guests, a twin- or full-size bed works best. Another idea is to invest in a trundle bed that pulls up to make a king-sized bed or a daybed to give the room a studio-apartment look.

2. Place the dresser in the closet if there is space or in another room entirely.

3. Paint the walls in a shade similar to the bedding and drapery color. This creates a monochromatic look that does not draw attention to the small size of the bedroom as white walls and a darker bedding color can. A soft or pastel color scheme visually enlarges the look of the room and are excellent choices.

4. Hang decorative mirrors in the room instead of or along with artwork. Mirrors reflect the light in the room and visually enlarge the space.

5. Clear out clutter in the small bedroom. A large number of knickknacks or other small items make the space seem busy and crowded and minimize the available space. Utilize under-the-bed storage containers, closet organizers and multipurpose furniture to optimize storage of necessary items. For instance, a hope chest with a padded cushion provides seating and storage.

6. Hang airy, lightweight curtains that blow gently with the breeze from an open window. Matching the curtain color to the wall color helps enlarge the look of this area. Another idea is to use window blinds. Opening the curtains or blinds to the view outside is an excellent way to visually add space to the small area.
