Get Your Closet Organized

Organize clothes by color, type or season to tame a messy closet.

If your closet is bursting at the seams, organize it without breaking the bank. You need a system, but it doesn't need to be an expensive set of designer shelves and racks. Develop a plan for organizing your clothes and shoes and make some small investments to keep your closet tidy and functional and take the stress of getting ready for school or work out of your morning routine. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Empty out your closet so you can see everything you have. Find a new home for anything you don't wear that has been stored in your closet, such as knickknacks or framed pictures. Vacuum and wipe shelves and hanging rods.

2. Sort the contents of your closet. Donate clothes you haven't worn in more than a year. Throw away damaged clothes that can't be repaired. Pack away seasonal clothing in plastic containers that can be stored under the bed or in another cool, dry, dark place. Throw in a fabric softener sheet so they will be fresh-smelling when you pull them out. Label the containers with the contents.

4. Put your closet back together in sections. Decide on a system that works for you. Organize by garment, hanging all skirts together, for instance, or organize by color, starting at one side with black and working your way to white on the opposite side. If a splurge is in the organizing budget, make the closet look and work better, by investing in a complete set of matching hangers.

5. Get shoes off the floor. To save space, invest in a sturdy over-the-door shoe rack or inexpensive wire racks that sit on the bottom of the closet. It will be easier to see your shoes in the morning and keep pairs together.

6. Fold clothes for the shelf that runs along the top of your closet. Group clothes according to purpose: casual T-shirts, workout tops or sweaters then stack the groups from heaviest to lightest. Make a small investment in inexpensive dividers to keep the piles from toppling over.
