Track Closet Design Ideas

Make better use of your closet space by upgrading to a track closet design.

If you're looking for an inexpensive way to organize your closet, creating a track closet design can save you money and give you the space you crave. Track closets feature a track on which closet sections, such as shelves and drawers, hang. You can get a track closet system that's completely metal or one which features a metal track and wood components. Does this Spark an idea?

Double Up

Whether your closet is large or small, it's important to use every inch of space you can, so double up. Use the same space for double the stuff. Install two bars from which to hang your clothes, one on top of the other, leaving hanging room. If you don't have a lot of clothes to hang, add shelving for sweaters, jeans or other clothes you tend to fold. If you have a lot of shoes, add a few spots for footwear.

Add Drawers

If you have a large closet and a small bedroom, incorporate drawers into your track closet design and eliminate the need for a dresser in the bedroom. You can purchase wooden drawers or metal baskets for track closet systems in single- or multiple-drawer options. For an extra space in which to shove shoes or bedsheets, add drawers along the bottom of your closet design.

Create Shelf Space

To keep your sweaters from getting creased at the shoulders, build some shelf space into your track closet design. You can use shelves to store a variety of elements, from shoes to sweaters to books. Choose a longer shelf for clothing or short cubbyhole shelves for shoes. Leave a long shelf space at the top of your closet where you can put bedroom linens, extra blankets or other items you don't use often. In most cases, you can purchase extra shelves for a track closet design system after it's been installed.

Mix It Up

Since track closet systems hang from a track you install on your wall, it's common to end up with extra unused space at the bottom of your design. Use every bit of space in your closet by mixing up your closet organization systems. Pick up simple organizational elements, like shelves or fabric drawers, in the same color. Slip these units into pockets of excess space to hold shoes, scarves, belts or other miscellaneous items you need to keep in your closet.
