Build Underbed Storage

Build under-bed storage to take advantage of the often-overlooked space.

Make use of the unused space under your bed with under-bed storage that you can build yourself. Under-bed storage consists of a box with casters to allow ease of access. Sweaters, shoes, belts and small electronic devices are all ideal for under-bed storage. Or, if you have more books than bookshelves, you might consider storing books and magazines in this rolling storage that rolls neatly under your bed. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Place the two 3/4-by-3-by-34 1/2-inch panels parallel to each other on a work surface with the 3/4-by-34 1/2-inch edge flat on the surface. The panels should be 46 1/2 inches apart. These are the front and back panels.

2. Position one 3/4-by-3-by-48-inch panel perpendicular across the front and back panel with the 3/4-by-48-inch edge flat on the work surface to form a rectangular box. These are the side panels.

3. Drive two evenly spaced flush trim wood screws through the outside of the side panels into the ends of the front and back panels to fasten the assembly together.

4. Center the handle on the outside face of one 3/4-by-3-by-34 1/2-inch panel. This is the front panel. Drive the provided screws through the handle into the front panel with a screw gun.

5. Align one 3/4-by-36-by-48-inch panel over the assembly so that the edges are flush with the front, back and sides. This is the bottom panel. Drive evenly spaced wood screws through the outside of the bottom panel into the edges of the assembly every 6 inches.

6. Position one caster in each corner on the bottom panel. Drive the provided screws through the holes in the casters into the bottom panel to fasten them in place. Turn the assembly upright.

7. Align the remaining 3/4-by-36-by-48-inch panel over the top edges of the sides, front and back. This is the lid. Center a hinge on the inside joint of the lid and back 4 inches in from each edge. Drive the provided screws through the screw holes in the hinges to secure them in place.

8. Apply wood finish to the under-bed storage assembly. Allow the finish to dry prior to handling.
