Expedit bookcases, produced by Ikea, an inexpensive modern furniture company, have open cube storage. You can place the bookcase in the center of a room and use it as a divider, or put it against a wall. As with most of the furniture Ikea makes, you'll have to put the Expedit bookcase together yourself. A set of illustrated instructions comes in the box with the bookcase pieces and hardware, but these instructions can prove confusing, especially if you aren't the type to put furniture together yourself. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
Small Bookcase
1. Open the box and arrange the pieces on a carpeted surface. If you only have hard floors, spread out a blanket to protect the bookcase as you build it. Make sure you have all the pieces and all the hardware you need, including the Allen wrench, screws, wood dowels, brackets and floor protectors. You should have a thin middle piece, two thin square pieces, two side pieces and a top piece and a bottom piece for the smaller Expedit bookcase.
2. Set the top piece of the bookcase against the top edge of one of the side pieces. Push the threaded screw pieces through the hole on each corner of the top piece and into the hole on each corner of the side piece. Fasten with the Allen wrench. Before you fasten the top and side pieces together, check to make sure the holes on the side and bottom of the pieces are facing inside the bookcase.
3. Push a wooden dowel into the top and bottom holes on the underside of the top piece. Slide a thin square piece onto the dowels and push it into place.
4. Push four wooden dowels into the holes on the edge of the thin middle piece. Push the other ends of the dowels into the four holes on the inside middle of the side piece.
5. Push a dowel into the top and bottom hole in the center of the underside of the middle piece. Line up the holes on the top edge of the second thin square with the dowels, and push the square onto the dowels.
6. Push four dowels into the holes on the other edge of the thin middle piece and into the top and bottom holes on the bottom edge of the square piece.
7. Line up the center holes on the other side piece with the dowels on the middle piece and push them into place. Line up the center holes on the bottom piece with the dowels on the bottom of the square piece and push them into place.
8. Fasten the top piece to the other side piece by pushing a threaded screw fastener in the holes on the corners. Tighten with an Allen wrench.
9. Secure the bottom piece to the bookcase by pushing the threaded screw fasteners into the holes at each corner. Tighten with the Allen wrench. Cover the holes on the bottom with protective feet.
10. Turn the bookcase right side up and position it against a wall. Use the mounting brackets included with the bookcase to attach it to the wall.
Six-Foot Bookcase
11. Take all the pieces out of the box and make sure you have everything you need. You should have have 20 thin squares and four thin, long shelves, as well as two sides and a top and a bottom piece. You'll also have four short screws, eight threaded screw fasteners, wood dowels, an Allen wrench, floor protectors and mounting hardware.
12. Push 12 wooden dowels into the holes along the long side on the underside of the top piece. Push 12 dowels into the holes on the bottom piece as well. Six dowels will be located on the top edge of each piece, and six will go on the bottom edge. You will not push the dowels into the four holes on the sides of each piece.
13. Push eight wooden dowels into the holes on the side pieces. Don't put dowels in the two holes on each outer corner.
14. Line up the top edge of one side piece with the underside of the top piece. Push a threaded screw fastener into the hole at each corner of the top piece and tighten it with the Allen wrench to attach the top and side piece together.
15. Push four square pieces onto the dowels on the top piece. Two dowels will go into the holes on the edge of the square pieces.
16. Slide a long, thin shelf under the four thin squares, lining up the holes on the edge of the shelf with two of the dowels on the side piece. Push eight dowels into the holes on the underside of the long shelf.
17.Push four squares into the dowels on the underside of the long shelf, and then slide another long shelf under the four squares. Repeat the process, pushing dowels into the underside of the long shelf and attaching four squares, until all the squares and shelves are accounted for.
18. Attach the other side piece to the top piece by lining up the two holes on the top edge of the side piece with the two remaining dowels on the underside of the top piece. Push it into place. The dowels on the side piece should line up with the holes on the edge of each shelf piece.
19. Line up the dowels on the bottom piece with the holes on the bottom edge of the last row of square pieces. Push the bottom piece into place.
20. Secure the side and bottom pieces to the bookcase by pushing the remaining threaded screw fasteners into the holes in the corners of the top and bottom pieces. Tighten the fasteners with the Allen wrench to secure them.
21. Carefully turn the bookcase upright. You should have a friend help you, as it will be very heavy and large. Push the bookcase against a wall and fasten it to the wall with the included brackets. You can also leave the bookcase in the center of the room.
