A well-designed closet provides plenty of storage space and lasts for years.
Creating your own closet allows you to tailor its size and shape to your exact needs. A good closet will last for many years, providing space to store things tidily and, with a little decoration, even serving to brighten up the room it is in. With the right know how, you can create your own closet in a day. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Measure the space you have available using the tape measure. Clear the space where the closet is to sit so you can work freely and get an accurate measurement. Measure the width of the space available. Measure the height of the space available. Finally, measure the depth of the space, which is the distance from the wall to where the front of the closet is to be. Note the measurements on your paper.
2. Design your closet using your measurements plus a pen and paper. Indicate the height at which any clothes rails are to be placed, and also whether you will install any shelves. If adding shelves, make a note of the space between each shelf, their width and also the thickness of the wood to be used. Not the height and width of your closet, as this will determine the size and shape of the frame.
3. Purchase enough wood to make the frame for your closet, plus any shelves to be added to it. Each shelf will need two blocks of wood, one on each end of the underside of the shelf, to reinforce it and also attach it to the frame. Once you have the wood, lay the pieces for your frame on the floor and construct a basic frame using a hammer and nails.
4. Lift the frame and mount it in place on the wall using the screws. Measure the wood for the shelves and mark any points to be cut with a pencil. Cut your shelves to size using the hacksaw. Attach the support blocks using wood glue and screws for extra strength. Drill screw holes in the frame and the support blocks so screws can fit in.
5. Screw the shelves into the frame. Unless they are already attached, fit the end mount pieces to your clothes rail, or rails. These mount pieces contain holes where screws will hold the rails to the wall. Mark on the wall the position where the rail will fit using a pencil. Drill holes to attach the rails to the wall. Screw the rails into place. Your closet is now finished.
