Declutter A Small Messy Closet

If you've opened a small closet to find something and found yourself navigating an obstacle course of assorted clothes and other items, it's time to declutter that closet. Not only will you have more storage space, you'll feel better and perhaps get rid of unpleasant odors in the closet. Most closets get cluttered because clothes accumulate over time, and it can be hard to get rid of them. Eventually, though, you need to clean. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Set aside a block of uninterrupted time during which you can work on cleaning the closet, such as during the weekend. If you start a major project and have to stop midway for other obligations, you aren't likely to finish cleaning because of the perceived mess demoralizing you.

2. Sort your clothing into three piles: keep, donate and discard.

3. Discard the box of clothes you want to throw away before you have a chance to change your mind. Place any clothing more than three years old into the discard pile, and get rid of clothing that isn't in wearable condition.

4. Sort the clothing you want to keep into winter and summer wear.

5. Hang winter clothes on one side of the closet and summer clothes on the other. Keep similar types of clothing together: Pants go with pants and shirts with shirts.

6. Take the box of to-be-donated clothes to a thrift store, or give them away.

7. Remove one item of clothing for every new item you add in the future to prevent clutter from building up again.

8. Find places for other items in the small closet so that the only thing in it is clothing. For example, if any sports supplies were kept in the closet, you could place them in the garage or their owner's room. Seldom-used items such as Christmas lights could go in the attic or garage.
