Make Plywood Look Like Bifold Doors

Paint plywood bifold doors white to match your interior doors.

Whether you live in a home with limited closet space or you have sliding closet doors that hamper your ability to view the inside of your closet, bifold doors are the answer. You can easily make plywood look like bifold doors. Because the thickest plywood is only 3/4-inch thick, you'll need to glue two pieces together to get the 1-inch thickness needed to fit the hardware required to install a bifold door. Add a coat of paint to make the doors look like solid wood bifold doors. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the height and width of the closet door space. Divide the measurement in half and obtain two pieces of 3/4-inch cabinet-grade plywood and two pieces of hardwood plywood to fit. A home improvement store will cut the plywood to fit your measurements.

2. Place drop cloths on the ground beneath your worktable or sawhorses.

3. Glue a piece of hardwood plywood over each piece of cabinet-grade plywood with carpenter's wood glue. Clamp the pieces together with the spring clamps. You will need 10 to 12 clamps per door. Let the glue set overnight.

4. Sand the edges of the plywood to remove any excess glue. Sand the hardwood plywood to prepare the surface for the paint. Wipe the dust away with a drop cloth.

5. Apply a thin coat of paint primer to the doors. Use the roller to paint the front and back of the doors. Use the paintbrush for the edges. Let the primer dry overnight.

6. Paint the doors with acrylic white latex paint. Use the paint roller on the front and back; use the paintbrush to paint the edges. Let the paint dry for 24 to 48 hours before installing hardware.

7. Measure the width and height of the door to find the direct center of the door. Install the door pulls in the centers of the doors.

8. Install the bifold hardware. Follow the manufacturer's directions to install the hardware.
