Bedroom storage has long been limited to dressers and closets. You can buy a vast array of closet organizers, plastic boxes and elaborate kits to help with storage. But if you don't have thousands of dollars to spend, or if space is limited, you still have plenty of alternatives. Does this Spark an idea?
Old Chests
Wooden chests, hope chests and old travel chests allow you to decorate nostalgically while increasing your space for storage. If you have a large bedroom, add an armoire or even an entertainment center to keep items out of view.
Under the Bed
Under the bed is a wealth of unused space just begging for organized storage. You can use plastic under-bed boxes available at department stores; or consider building a pedestal for your bed complete with drawers for storage. Waterbed designers have been doing it for years. Build or purchase a wooden pedestal with drawers or doors to access the space underneath.
Barrels
Use plastic or cardboard shipping barrels to store blankets and winter clothes in the summer. Drape a small tablecloth over the top to hide the barrel. Set a lamp on top and you have an instant nightstand.
Dresser in the Closet
Put a dresser in a closet. Even small closets can often fit a small- to medium-size dresser. This provides extra organization in layers of space. If the dresser is low enough, you will be able hang shirts over the top of it; or raise the bar a few inches.
Shelves
Many bedrooms have room at the ceiling level for storage space. Build high and deep shelves for storing items such as winter clothes in the summer and vice versa or heavy blankets when it is 90 degrees outside.
