Maximize Small Closet Space

A small closet can be organized to hold more clothing.

Some homes and many apartments have limited closet space. This can be inconvenient because, if you are like many people, you probably have a lot of clothing that should be put on hangers rather than stuffed into a dresser drawer. Not hanging your clothes properly can cause wrinkling, and it might be hard to find the item you need. There are a few simple things you can do to maximize small closet space and hang up more clothing without overcrowding. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Purchase tiered hangers. There are different styles of these hangers, but all allow you to hang several shirts or pants neatly on one hanger, reducing bulk in your closet. You'll be able to make better use of vertical space and hang more items on the rod.

2. Place an over-the-door shoe rack on the closet door, if your closet door style permits. These hang vertically on the door and reduce shoe clutter from the floor of the closet. You may also store other items, such as scarves, winter hats and gloves, in these shoe racks.

3. Store off-season clothing in stackable plastic boxes on the floor or on a shelf, if your closet has a shelf. Place the boxes directly below the hanging clothes.

4. Mount adhesive-backed wall hooks to side walls of the closet to hang ties, belts, scarves and other accessories. Find these hooks at most large retail stores, such as home improvement stores.

5. Add a second hanger rod below the original one, if vertical space allows and your clothing will not touch the floor if you do this. You will be able to get twice the amount of clothing in the same space this way.
