Frame A New Closet

A new closet is an excellent way to increase the storage options for your home. It creates storage area by adding space to install shelves, hang up clothes or store boxes of items from your garage. Building closet space requires special carpenter's skills, but it is something an average person can accomplish. It all starts by building the frame for the closet. You can start this part of the project after deciding how large to make your closet and where to place it in the room. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Decide on the closet size and mark the area on the floor for the installation with a drywall ruler and pencil. Remember to include a gap in the marks to indicate an area for the closet door.

2. Cut 2-by-4 boards with a power saw to fit along the length and width of your line on the floor. Lay the boards along the line and mark each one with a pencil before cutting if necessary.

3. Screw the boards to the flooring along the marks with 3-inch screws and a power screwdriver. Do not install boards on the area indicated for the door. Leave this section open.

4. Cut and install 2-by-4 boards on the ceiling directly above the floor boards with 3-inch screws and a power screwdriver. Draw a line up the wall using a drywall ruler from the edges of the boards where they intersect the wall and continue it all the way across the ceiling to establish where these boards should go.

5. Install 2-by-4 boards in between the boards on the floor and ceiling as studs. Install the first one against the wall and space them 16 inches apart on center. Screw each stud into the floor and ceiling 2-by-4s with a power screwdriver and 3 inch screws.
