Resolve Bedroom Storage Problems

Utilize closet space efficiently to help resolve bedroom storage problems.

An uncluttered bedroom is a much more peaceful place to rest and relax than a cluttered one. Especially in a small bedroom, clothes, spare bedding and books never seem to fit in the existing storage space. The best way to resolve bedroom storage problems is to install storage solutions that provide a space for everything. To avoid a cluttered look, these storage solutions should be out of sight as much as possible. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Add Under-Bed Storage

1. Measure your under-bed dimensions with a tape measure. Write down the height, width and length of the space under your bed.

2. Divide the width of the space under your bed by two to find the proper depth for under-bed storage units on each side of the bed. For example, somebody with a queen-sized bed that is 60 inches wide will need under-bed storage units on each side that extend no more than 30 inches deep.

3. Purchase storage bins or drawers that will fit under the bed. The total width of the bins or drawers on each side of the bed should add up to no more than the length of the bed, and ideally a couple inches less to allow for clearance space between each drawer or bin so they can slide in and out.

4. Fill the storage bins with seasonal clothing and bedding items or other bedroom items that do not need to be accessed very frequently.

Add Closet Storage

5. Measure the height of the hanging space in the closet and install two closet rods for short hanging items in a portion of the closet if the closet hanging space is at least 80 inches tall. Each closest rod needs to have at least 40 inches of hanging space below it for tops or pants. Installation instructions vary depending on the type of closet rod.

6. Measure the depth of your closet. Purchase a dresser or hanging shelves with a depth as close to your closet depth as possible in order to make use of all the space. A dresser is ideal for a closet with extra space toward the bottom and hanging shelves are ideal for a closet with extra vertical space.

7. Install metal hooks on any empty walls of a closet and hang items such as belts, ties, hats and purses on the hooks.

8. Purchase a shoe organizer if you have a lot of shoes in your closet. Set a shelved organizer on the floor or install a hanging organizer on a wall or the back of the door.
